Poet strolling by a marshy bank

Liang Kai Chinese

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 210

This haunting image may depict Qu Yuan (ca. 340–ca. 278 BCE), who is often shown in solitary contemplation by the banks of a river. Qu was a government minister who was unjustly exiled to a remote corner of the kingdom and subsequently drowned himself. The purported author of the Nine Songs, Qu has long been admired as a romantic and tragic figure and one of the earliest known poets in Chinese history.
