Goldsborough is one of a series of columns Truitt created over the course of her career, as she developed a distinctive hard-edge vocabulary that merges sculpture with painting, form with color. Characteristically, she established the desired dimensions, commissioned the building of the wood structure, and set about her intensive process of painting the surface in a non-naturalistic color and then sanding it down repeatedly to create a fine, smooth finish. The rectilinear mauve structure has a painted gray "base" that is integral to the composition; because the column sits off-center, the sculpture exhibits a dynamic asymmetry despite its monolithic form.
