Incense burner

China

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 210

This elegant incense burner embodies both the antiquarian taste and minimalist design of Song arts. Based on larger- scale bronze wine warmers widely used in the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), this smaller version was made by Song artists to accommodate its new function. The elaborate decorative pattern often found on ancient bronzes was also discarded in favor of horizontal bands. This treatment not only adds visual simplicity but also enhances handling pleasure.
