Autumn Festival in the Mountains

Okada Hankō Japanese

Not on view

This tall and narrow composition captures a scene from an autumn harvest festival, with visitors to a mountain temple surrounded by hazy mist. In the front courtyard, three figures are seated around a stone table. A young servant prepares tea for the group, fanning a stove to heat a kettle of water.

Like his father, Okada Beisanjin (1744–1820), Hankō was a master of literati painting. He rendered this joyous scene using the rhythmic brushstrokes characteristic of the style. For two generations, the Okada were active members of the literati circle in Osaka, where Hankō also inherited his family’s rice store.
