Marble vase with high foot and lug handles
Technical analysis: Ultraviolet-induced visible luminescence examination and optical microscopy
The vase appears intact but was previously repaired around the neck where several fragments were bonded, the joins infilled and painted. A large loss to the rim and one of the lugs was replaced with fill material and painted to tone. There are small losses to the rim, foot and lugs. Much of the lower section of the body and parts of the foot and interior are covered in a pale but dense accretion.
The bulbous body of the vase with its four pierced lugs rests on a tall conical foot and has a tapering slightly convex neck with a contoured vertical rim. The handmade character of the vessel is especially evident when looking at it from different views. In an unpublished report, a copy of which is preserved in the Getz-Gentle Photographic Archive of Cycladic Art in the Onassis Library, Pat Getz Gentle Preziosi attributes the vase to Kandila Sculptor A.
