In two of his best-known series, Asphalt, from the 1960s, and Plastics, dating to the late 1980s, Tōmatsu Shōmei gathered the personal effects of anonymous individuals to suggest something of their lives and their impact on the environment. These three photographs show colorful plastic items and other litter that washed up on Kujūkuri Beach in Chiba Prefecture, near where the artist lived at the time.
