Bamboo, old tree, and rock

Wu Zhen Chinese

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 216

By the time Wu Zhen created this artwork, the combination of bamboo with an old tree and rock had become a common subject for painters of the educated elite class. Wu’s poetic inscription celebrates the symbolic virtues of bamboo:

Tall stalks pierce the clouds.
Perhaps you find it strange, not recognizing the wings of a phoenix.
A pure sound enters the realm of the soundless;
Don’t let Zhonglang blow his long-necked flute.
