Elephants Fighting
This scene of fighting elephants is attributed to a woman artist at the Mughal court, Khurshid Banu, whose name is recorded in a Persian inscription in the outer border. It was rare, but not unknown, to have female artists working at the Mughal court. The harmonies and contrasts between the vivid green ground, amber border, brightly dressed figures, and grisaille-tinted elephant figures must have appealed to Hodgkin’s sense of color and his love for images of the animals.
